It always happens in slow motion, that glass red knocked out of your hand, those sneaky sauce covered little fingers smearing over the cushions, your once unspoiled sofa looks like the carpet in a daycare after a rainy day inside.

Not all sofa messes are a dramatic event, so whether you’re looking for advice on general maintenance or you need help spot cleaning after a certain toddler decided the upholstery was their personal napkin, we’ve got it covered below.

Fabric care depends on the colour, material and grade of the fabric. Always carefully follow manufacturer’s instructions on how to care for and maintain the particular fabric.

If you are unsure at all, please call for Cintesi for advice.

Prevention/Protection

Once you’ve received your new item, we recommend protecting the fabric with Scotch Guard Fabric Water Sheild – this repels water-based spills for easier cleanup. It is best practice to complete a test patch on a section which is unseen before applying to the entire item.

Regular maintenance is sure to prolong the life of your fabric furniture. Vacuuming the crevices using the fabric attachment or a soft brush head to clean any of those telltale crumbs, dust, or other dry messes. A reminder: make sure the vacuum head is clean.

After vacuuming take this opportunity to flip, rotate, and fluff your removable cushions.

Just like most furniture items, direct light, like the kind from floor to ceiling windows, will cause your fabric to fade and discolour over time. To avoid these issues, simply ensure fabric furniture isn’t in the line of light, use a throw blanket over affected areas, or configure a layout that makes sense for your space — and the fabric.

Cleaning

  1. Grab a soft lint-free cloth or paper towel; use this to absorb any liquid. Be sure you don’t blot or rub. Rubbing will only cause the stain to go deeper into the fabric.
  2. Leave the cloth on the spot until as much of the liquid is absorbed as possible.
  3. Using a soft damp cloth or sponge, and if necessary, dishwashing liquid or white vinegar diluted in a lot of water.
  4. Gently blot, making sure not to saturate the fabric.
  5. Once you’re satisfied with the state of the stain, let the fabric air dry.
